The qualification is based around the world of Engineering and aims to introduce students to the various strands available within the field, e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering. The subject offers students the chance to develop their knowledge and skills through tasks set in realistic work-related contexts. The course has some Mathematics and Physics content so would be suited to those pupils who have a keen interest in both areas of study and would like to apply their knowledge to practical situations. This qualification is equivalent to one GCSE grade A* - D.
Structure of units & advantages to learners
- Develop a range of skills both practical and academic, through applied learning that will be useful in the workplace and for future learning
- Provide a foundation of knowledge of engineering that will help learners progress to further study or enter the workplace
- Motivating learners through purposeful tasks set in real world contexts
Structure of units
The qualification consists of three mandatory units. Internally assessed work must be completed in school and adopt the principles of controlled assessment.
Unit 1: Engineering Design (coursework 25%)
Unit 2: Producing Engineering Products (coursework 50%)
Unit 3: Solving Engineering Problems (external examination 25%)
The department regularly offers extra-curricular visits to local businesses such as General Dynamics and GE Aviation. There are also opportunities to visit countries such as Germany and Spain where pupils can experience the world of engineering first hand. Trips include visits abroad to the Allianz Arena, Audi Ingolstadt and BMW.
Bursaries are available to pupils that wish to pursue engineering at KS5.
General Dynamics offers £1000 to the top engineering student and the Welsh Valleys Engineering Project offers £4000 to pupils wishing to study engineering at Merthyr College. This is part of the Panasonic Trust Future Engineers Award.
